"Esau" is an image of a religious man for whom material interests and benefits are the main thing in his life.

"Esau" is also an image of one of the two spiritually related, but different in essence, directions of understanding and fulfillment of the Will of God, the faith of the people of Israel.

 Esau's nickname - "Edom" - "red", was given to him because he denied and sold the spiritual "Primogeniture" of his knowledge, the proclamation of the Divine Truth of God's Will and for the reddish colored "Lentil Bread", i.e. for earthly, transient corruptible values.

The word "Edom" denotes both the descendants of Esau and the name of their land.
