"Martha" is an image of people who have only a sensual love for God, an emotional religious faith, i.e., a literalistic perception of the figurative meaning of the Word of the Scriptures.

 Martha, a former adherent of the Pharisaic doctrine of the literal resurrection of the dead, later realized the Truth of God's Will, accepted the Teachings of Christ, and so became one of His disciples.
